Seth Godin is one of the most prolific authors and online writers of the last 20 years. He writes a blog post every day. He’s published more than 10 books, many of which were bestsellers.

His latest post on “making two lists” is terrific. Seth suggests you make two lists. On one list, put down everything you consider negative in your life. Write down the names of your enemies, people who have done you wrong, opportunities you’ve missed, outcomes that were unfair, etc. Anything at all you find troublesome or irritating. Get it all out there. Really do your best job to make the list as comprehensive as you possible.

Then make a second list of everything you’re grateful for, the advantages you’ve been given, the lucky breaks that have gone your way, the things you know and the people you like.

Once you’re done making two lists, put one in the drawer and tape one to your bathroom mirror where you see it every day. The choice of which list to put where is yours.

The daily list is where you direct your daily attention. Your attention determines what you think about. What you think about determines what mindset you have. Your mindset determines your experience of the world. And your experience of the world determines whether you are optimistic or pessimistic, happy or sad, excited or tired.

Intentionally direct your attention every day or someone (or something) will direct it for you.
