The United States isn’t really a Democracy and hasn’t been for quite some time. Votes are weighted differently based on where you live or how much money you have.

Large, multi-national corporations have the most influence. They fund fake “scientific” research and bribe elected officials with money payments euphemistically called “campaign contributions” (now largely unlimited and unregulated thanks for the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Citizen’s United). Those officials then pass laws that help the corporate interests, regardless of whether those laws help or hurt American democracy or citizens.

The sins and lies of the sugar industry are just one in a long line of recent examples of corporate money and influence leading to policies and laws that enrich certain moneyed interests while poisoning our children and hurting our country as a whole.
